A sliding sash window is suited to a more traditional house exterior. There’s something ultimately satisfying about gliding sashes up and down to allow in fresh air. Two frames sit behind one another and can be in wood or UPVC.

Often old sash windows need replacing due to the mechanism no longer working, or you may find the window is just too heavy. Sometimes, when your buy an older house, bad paintwork can also glue the window frame together. Overtime, this causes the need to replace windows.

Key Features of Sliding Sash Windows:

  • Vertical or Horizontal Sliding:
    • Traditional sash windows typically have a vertical sliding mechanism where the sashes slide up or down within the frame.
    • Some modern variations allow for horizontal sliding to suit different architectural requirements.
  • Two Sashes:
    • Many sliding sash windows have two sashes: an upper sash and a lower sash, which can be either fixed or movable.
    • In double-hung sash windows, both sashes are movable for increased ventilation.
    • In single-hung sash windows, only one sash is movable.
  • Counterweights or Balances:
    • Older models use counterweights, concealed within the frame, connected by cords to assist with lifting the sashes.
    • Modern versions often replace this system with spring balances, which are easier to maintain.
  • Glazing Bars:
    • Many sliding sash windows feature glazing bars, dividing the glass into smaller panes for aesthetic or functional purposes.
    • This design is especially common in Georgian or Victorian-style properties.

Benefits of Sliding Sash Windows:

  1. Classic Aesthetic Appeal:
    • They offer a timeless, elegant look, making them ideal for period homes and buildings in conservation areas.
    • They can also be customised with modern materials and finishes for contemporary aesthetics.
  2. Space-Saving Design:
    • Since the sashes slide rather than swing open, they are excellent for spaces where outward-opening windows may be impractical.
  3. Ventilation Control:
    • By adjusting the position of the sashes, you can control airflow. For instance, opening the top sash allows warm air to escape, while opening the bottom sash brings in cooler air.
  4. Improved Energy Efficiency:
    • Modern versions are designed with advanced seals and double or triple glazing, improving insulation and reducing energy costs.
  5. Durability and Longevity:
    • High-quality materials like uPVC, aluminum, or treated timber ensure that sliding sash windows can withstand wear and tear.
  6. Customisable Features:
    • Available in various materials, colors, and finishes, with options for traditional or contemporary glazing styles.
  7. Ease of Cleaning:
    • Many modern sash windows are designed with a tilt mechanism, allowing the sashes to tilt inward for easy cleaning.
